garden annex

Like many small businesses, this operation had to quickly adapt when the global pandemic hit. Instead of committing to a lengthy and costly commercial office lease in downtown DC, the focus shifted to creating a dedicated annex for safe and flexible operations.

Designed as an open -air pavilion, the annex seamlessly connects to the patio and garden, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor connection. The surrounding yard, once overrun with bamboo, underwent a complete transformation into a thriving native garden. Extensive soil amendments helped mitigate water run-off and improved irrigation, ensuring long-term sustainability.

A 4' grid was implemented throughout the structure, optimizing efficiency by aligning with standard plywood panel dimensions and multi-slide door sizes. To promote health and environmental responsibility, only natural and non-toxic materials and finishes were used, reducing harmful waste and minimizing ecological impact.

Beyond its functional purpose, the annex and its extended outdoor space became a much-needed sanctuary, providing a safe and welcoming area for gatherings during unprecedented times. As the garden has flourished over time, the space continues to serve as a peaceful retreat— offering connection, reflection, and a lasting reminder or resilience and adaption.
