garden annex
Like everyone, this small business operation needed to quickly adapt when the global pandemic hit. Rather than committing to a lengthy and costly commercial office lease in downtown DC, the strategy shifted to building an annex to operate safely from.
The annex opens completely as an open-air pavilion, seamlessly connecting to the patio and garden. The yard, once overrun with bamboo, went through a total transformation into a native garden. Extensive soil amendment mitigated water run-off and enhanced garden irrigation.
A 4' grid is utilized throughout the structure to work with stock plywood panels and multi-slide door dimensions to maximize efficiency. Natural and non-toxic materials and finishes are used rigorously both for the health of the space as well as the reduction of harmful disposal to the earth’s soil.
The extended outdoor room created a much needed oasis and provided a protective space for gatherings during these unprecedented times. Over time, the garden has filled in, and the elevated indoor and outdoor living spaces that arose from a crisis response continue to be much enjoyed today, offering a peaceful space of connection and reflection.
