house on house
Upper floors were constructed on top of the postwar one-story rambler in order to provide more space for the growing family. Simple construction methods and modest materials and products were incorporated into this whole-house renovation to maximize the natural light, space, air, and views of the outdoors within the budgetary constraint. A double-height living room serves as a focal point, with a mezzanine office overlooking from above. The open floor plan on the main level prioritizes togetherness with the family while the rooms on the top floors provide private escapes. The simple, functional layout of the rooms supports the rituals of daily life. The use of plywood throughout adds playfulness to the rooms.
